Sinds 1877, het jaar waarin hij voor het eerst gepubliceerd werd, heeft de roman Black Beauty van Anna Sewell altijd al tot de meest geliefde dierenverhalen ter wereld behoord. Het verhaal staat helemaal in het teken van een opmerkelijk zwart paard met een witte bles op het voorhoofd. Door vreugdevolle maar toch ook hartverscheurende gebeurtenissen in zijn leven komt hij van het idyllische platteland in Londen terecht. De film werd geschreven en geregisseerd door Caroline Thompson (The Secret Garden, 1993). Het verhaal werd al vaak verfilmd, maar dit is de eerste keer dat men erin geslaagd is zo dicht bij het boek te blijven. Wanneer u deze film gezien heeft, zal u voor altijd het opstandige merrieveulen Ginger en de ondeugende Merrylegs in uw hart koesteren, maar natuurlijk ook Beauty zelf, die door zijn zacht karakter het hart van heel wat mensen weet te veroveren, zo ook dat van boer Grey (Sean Bean), de jonge Joe Green (Andrew Knott) en de zachtaardige koetsier Jerry Barker (David Thewlis).
