Born in Brussels, Claude Lévi-Strauss has been called the father of modern anthropology and the leading figure in structuralist thought. At the age of twenty-seven, he joined the French university mission that helped found the University of São Paulo. After teaching in New York City, he returned to France. In 1973 he was appointed a member of the Académie Française.
